Noh Kyung-Hee

Abstract
This study was attempted to find the difference of degree in stress, family support, self-efficacy and mental health between general high school students and vocational high school students, to analyze the correlation of stress, family support, self-efficacy and the influence of stress, family support, self-efficacy on their mental health, and to get the basic data which would be promoted high school students¡¯ mental health. The subjects for this study were the second grade highschool boy students in one general high school and two vocational high school in Chungchongnamdo and the sample was 751 students, 384 general highschool students and 367 vocational highschool students. The data collection was done from June 22 to July 10, 1998. The instruments were stress scale by Hwang(1990), mental health scale by Ko(1996), family support scale by Kang(1985), and general self-efficacy scale by Shere & Maddux(1982). The data were analyzed for frequency, x^(2)-test, t-test, Regression, Pearson¡¯s Correlation Coefficient by using SAS program. The results of this study were as follows; 1. There was a statistically significant difference in only family support(t=4.409, P<.0001), between general highschool students and vocational highschool students. 2. Correlations of stress, family support, self-efficacy and mental health were as below; (1) There was a statistically significant negative correalation (r=-.075, P<.04) between stress and mental health. (2) There was a statistically highly significant correlation between mental health and family support(r=-46, P<.0001), mental health and self-efficacy(r=.59, P<.0001), family support and self-efficacy(r=.313, P<.0001). 3. The Family support and self-efficacy explained 43% of the variance of mental health of male highschool students. In conclusion, this study revealed that family support of general highschool students was higher than that of vocational highschool students. In order to increase mental health of highschool students effectively, family support and self-efficacy must be increased. As there was a correlation between family support and self-efficacy, efforts to promote self-efficacy of students are required in home and school. School authorities have to search plans like ¡°family support-class program¡±s as one counternieasure to increase family support. Both teachers and parents have to make educational efforts to promote self-efficacy constantly. Also, it is necessary to develop programs to improve self-efficacy.
